An Update on the NACE Career Readiness Competencies & NACE Competency Assessment Tool

We are delighted by our members’ ongoing commitment to the NACE Career Readiness Competencies and the work that has gone into incorporating the competencies into curricular and co-curricular activities as well as internship programs.

The NACE Competency Assessment Tool is the latest step in our journey to ensure all new college graduates are career ready.

Concerns About the Equity & Inclusion Competency

Many have raised concerns about the Equity & Inclusion Competency as well as the rubric associated with the competency in the tool.

While this is now a national concern, many members have already faced this issue because of state laws that have been in effect for the past few years. They have addressed the issue by opting not to use the Equity & Inclusion Competency or that piece in the tool.

The same option is available to all. The competencies and the tool were designed with flexibility in mind: Use those pieces that align with your institution's or organization's specific needs.

This is also true of the tool available through our partners, Suitable and Career Launch:  You can select just those pieces of the tool that work for you.

NACE Competency Assessment Tool (PDF): Free to Members, Easy to Get Just the Pieces You Want

As a member, you enjoy free access to the Competency Assessment Tool in PDF format. The tool, like the competencies themselves, have been designed with flexibility in mind. You can opt to assess your students using all eight rubrics OR just those that work for your institution or organization.

To make it easy, we’ve created PDF versions for each competency rubric so you can download just those you want to use. (Using all? There is still an “all eight” download option.)

Please note: To maintain the validity of the rubrics, you cannot alter wording.

Looking ahead

We know that the Equity and inclusion Competency and the corresponding rubric in the tool are a challenge for many of our members. Although not using the competency/rubric works for many, others have expressed the need to foster this competency in their students and interns.

To address this need, NACE is considering how to review the competency to ensure it addresses both the legal concerns and the important fundamentals inherent in it. Stay tuned.
