FAQ: NACE Board of Directors and Officer Positions
1. What is the composition of the NACE Board of Directors?
The Board of Directors is comprised of five officers plus six to 11 directors, equally balanced among college and employer members. Typically there are four college and four employer directors annually, with special knowledge-based appointments of non-voting Directors as needed depending on strategic priorities.
The officers and directors are elected through national elections by NACE members. They operate as a single national Board of Directors, overseeing the interests of all NACE members.
2. What are the primary responsibilities of a NACE Director?
Provides strategic and fiduciary oversight for the organization.
Actively participates in regularly scheduled Board and Board Committee meetings. Reads background materials distributed prior to meetings and share expertise and perspectives as part of meeting discussions. Provides candid and constructive feedback, advice and comments concerning all aspects of the association with the intent to strengthen the organization’s efforts and provide value to members. Supports all decisions that are arrived at by the Board of Directors.
• Serves as a Board advisor to one or more association strategic priority committees and/or affinity groups and participates in board work teams as required or appropriate.
Demonstrates actions consistent with the ethical and legal obligations of Board service and in support of the NACE organizational values and Principles for Ethical Professional Practice.
Affirms and supports NACE’s commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity.
Be an advocate for NACE with appropriate constituents and interested parties. Helps members and others interested in the work of the association to better understand the programs, services, and value offered by NACE membership.
The NACE Directors serve a two-year term, beginning on July 1 and ending June 30, two years later. Employer and college members serve in these roles on an alternating basis so that NACE has a balanced number of college and employer members on the Board.
4. What are the commitments of serving as a NACE Director or Officer?
Directors and officers will spend a minimum of eight days a year and in some instances as much as 12 days, depending on the Board and committee meeting requirements.
Directors and officers are required to participate in a Board Orientation program prior to the first Board meeting after which they have been elected.
Directors and officers will attend virtual and in-person Board meetings. There are minimum of two in-person meetings per year and two virtual meetings. In-person meetings are held in varied U.S. locations and will require travel.
Directors and officers will review meeting materials in advance.
Directors and officers will serve on standing committees or strategic priority committees. They will serve as Board advisors to these groups and share information as appropriate. Meetings occur most often virtually. Directors may spend several hours in virtual meetings throughout their tenure. If a face-to-face meeting is required, meetings may last more than one day.
Officers will serve as the Executive Committee and will meet virtually periodically and face-to-face in advance of each Board meeting.
It is recommended that individuals obtain advance commitment and support from their employer before submitting nomination for a director or officer position.
Have financial support from your organization/company (or other means) to attend the NACE annual conference and expo.
5. How are expenses handled?
NACE reimburses Board and Directors for travel, lodging, and meals for NACE meetings.
6. WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS?
NACE members with a minimum of three years professional experience are eligible for election as a NACE college or employer Director.
Minimum requirements include experience within NACE or another association in ONE OR MORE of the following areas:
Chairing or serving on a committee or task force.
Writing a blog post, NACE Journal article, NACE Community post, or other type of communication.
Actively engaging in NACE events such as F2F, Roundtables, Career Coaching, Public Policy Forum, Annual Conference, etc.
Creating and delivering professional presentations.
Successful completion of a NACE professional development opportunity, such as the Leadership Advancement Program (LAP), Management Leadership Institute (MLI), Recruiter Leadership Institute (RLI), or Executive Leadership Symposium (ELS).
7. WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO BECOME A DIRECTOR OF NACE?
Must be a member in good standing of NACE.
Possess an active interest and involvement in the employment of the college educated, a willingness to assist in setting and achieving the association’s goals, and the ability to devote the time and energy necessary to attend and participate in Board and Board Committee meetings.
Have a history of professional achievement and success with NACE or with another organization or association that provides added-value to the make-up of the NACE Board and strengthens the role of the Board in supporting the vision, purpose, and values of the association.
Have a clear understanding of board governance and the importance of transparent, values-based leadership, and decision-making.
8. WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO BECOME Chair-ELECT ON THE NACE BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
The Chair-Elect must have prior NACE Board service of at least one term of office and be a member in good standing of the association.
Possess an active interest and involvement in the employment of the college educated, a willingness to assist in setting and achieving the association’s goals, and the ability to devote the time and energy necessary to attend and participate in Board and Board Committee meetings.
Have a history of professional achievement and success with NACE or with another organization or association that provides added-value to the make-up of the NACE Board and strengthens the role of the Board in supporting the vision, purpose, and values of the association.
Have a clear understanding of board governance and the importance of transparent, values-based leadership, and decision-making.
Have proven experience in the following areas:
Strategic planning
Fiscal management
Group management and staff supervision

9. WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO BECOME VICE-Chair ON THE NACE BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
The Vice Chair – College or Employer must have prior NACE Board service of at least one term of office and be member in good standing of the association.
Possess an active interest and involvement in the employment of the college educated, a willingness to assist in setting and achieving the association’s goals, and the ability to devote the time and energy necessary to attend and participate in Board and Board Committee meetings.
Have a history of professional achievement and success with NACE or with another organization or association that provides added-value to the make-up of the NACE Board and strengthens the role of the Board in supporting the vision, purpose, and values of the association.
Have a clear understanding of board governance and the importance of transparent, values-based leadership, and decision-making.
The Chair is elected for a three-year term and serves as Chair-Elect, Chair, and Past Chair. This position alternates each year between college and employer.
The Vice-Chair College and the Vice-Chair Employer each serve two-year terms. They are elected on an alternating basis each year.
