In Memoriam: Richard Stewart

Richard A. “Dick” Stewart, former NACE president (1992-93), died on May 6, 2024.

For his exceptional contributions to NACE and the profession, Stewart was elected to the NACE Academy of Fellows in 1994. He was also active in the Midwest Association of Colleges and Employers, serving as its president in 1972.

Stewart was an internationally known consultant, writer, speaker, and workshop leader for numerous business firms and government agencies. He authored a training course for recruiters produced by Brecker and Merryman and is co-author of The Campus Connection.

Stewart began his career as a graduate intern at Purdue’s Placement Service for Men in 1961, became director of placement services in 1966, and director emeritus of the Center for Career Opportunities after his retirement in 1999. During his tenure at Purdue, he was instrumental in implementing expanded student services and efficiencies through automation, including being one of the first universities to use computers and internet recruiting.

Stewart received his bachelor’s in industrial economics in 1959 and a master’s in industrial relations and human resources in 1962. In 1959, he was commissioned into the Army Corp of Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant and served in the Army Reserves form which he retired as a Captain in 1969.

A private memorial service for Stewart will be held in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
