Volunteering for NACE for many years has been an honor and a pleasure. My journey began by volunteering on a committee, which led to leadership for a committee and then to serving as the chair of the NACE Board of Directors! Volunteering with NACE allowed me to make connections and opens doors with so many of my peers who call NACE home and has created lifelong friendships and connections.
NACE brings together a vibrant, driven community of individuals who care deeply about equitable access, student success, and the future of work. As a volunteer, I’ve had the opportunity to give back and grow personally and professionally. Whether serving on a committee, contributing to thought leadership, or helping shape programming that moves our field forward, every role has felt meaningful.
I’m especially grateful for the people I’ve met along the way. The connections built through NACE—colleagues who have become collaborators, mentors, and friends—are invaluable. These conversations challenge you, inspire new ideas, and reignite your purpose.
I can't recommend it enough if you're considering getting more involved. Your voice and perspective are welcomed and appreciated, no matter how you contribute.
There are so many ways to give back to NACE, such as by joining one or more affinity groups, serving as a mentor to someone just joining the profession, or following a path like mine, which began by serving on a committee.
You can be asked or wait for someone to tap you on the shoulder, but why? In this case, all good things may not come to those who wait! Those who wait may miss an opportunity to make connections, understand a particular part of our professional practice, or meet someone new.
Each year, NACE reaches out to the membership to submit for committee involvement. I encourage you to do that each time the call is made. Take the application process seriously. When completing the application, remember that the committees move the needle for the profession, and in turn, you can build your skills and practice, it’s a win-win!
Getting on a committee may take a few times, but that’s okay. Ensure you take the time to complete a thoughtful application and that your background aligns with the needs. We’ve all seen applicants apply for roles where they toss their hat in the proverbial ring without regard to needs, so this is an opportunity to audit your skills and interests for alignment!
Share, share, share your expertise.
Sometimes we think what we are doing isn’t novel, or that everyone else is doing it, but what if they are not? There is the NACE Community, where you can share your thoughts, engage through Member Voices (where this article has been posted), and submit a proposal for the annual conference. Sure, you missed this year’s opportunity but start planning now for next year.
The story's moral is to raise your hand, find your space, and take the leap! NACE has been a part of my professional family, and volunteering has grown my network and professional practice. I can’t wait to meet you as we volunteer together!
