Summary

In this session, we explore novel approaches and new insights that have recently arisen when preparing students for the global workforce, and ensuring the workforce is prepared for them. Along with competencies and industry-specific knowledge and skills, now many other factors are emerging as vital. Surprising new insights underscore that emotional acuity, intercultural fluency, workplace wellness, authenticity, and connection are important to the success of new grads. To maximize their success, we’re preparing the new workforce for the world through active learning, professional projects, industry partnerships, and real-world case studies, while also honoring the importance of emotional acuity, intercultural fluency, workplace wellness, authenticity, and connection. The current climate, both in higher ed and industry around the world, has recruiters, career services professionals, and faculty adjusting and reevaluating the approach to ensure the new workforce is adequately prepared for the journey, no matter where it may take them.

Shawn VanDerziel, President & Chief Executive Officer, NACE
As president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Colleges and Employers, Shawn VanDerziel leads the association of 18,000 college career services professionals, university relations and recruiting professionals, and business solution providers that serve the community. As a leading voice on the employment of the college educated and advocate for equitable outcomes for all students, VanDerziel is featured regularly as an industry expert and is a sought-after speaker on a range of topics, including internships, hiring, career readiness, and trends in the workforce and college job market. Prior to joining the NACE staff, VanDerziel was with the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago for 23 years, where he most recently served as chief human resources officer and as chief of staff. His earlier roles included corporate recruiting with Norrell Corporation and a position in higher education as associate director of student enrollment at National Louis University.

Bob Athwal, Director of Culture & Belonging, Skyscanner
Bob Athwal has a unique background and perspective as he has been an employer, a vendor, and a university senior leader. Currently he is the global lead for Racial Diversity & Early Careers at Skyscanner. He is also the co-founder of three nonprofit organizations.

Larry Jackson, Senior Associate Director, Career Education, University of California - Berkeley
Larry Jackson is associate director for counseling and programs at the Career Center at University of California, Berkeley. In his role, h oversees a team of six assistant directors in the delivery of career services to undergraduate business and liberal arts students at the institution. Previously, Jackson served as assistant director for student career advising at Northwestern University, where he guided undergraduate and graduate students from STEM and liberal arts disciplines with their career exploration and planning. He has been actively involved in NACE by serving on several committees and task forces, including the Conference Program Committee, the Honors and Awards Committee, and the Inclusion Committee, as well as the Future of Skill Development and Hiring Task Force and the First-Destination Task Force. His contributions to the NACE organization and the career services profession were recognized at the 2017 Annual Conference, where he received the NACE/Spelman Johnson Rising Star Award. He has also contributed to the professional development of career services practitioners by delivering regional and national presentations at Midwest ACE and NASPA annual conferences. Jackson received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Bradley University and hold a master’s degree in clinical psychology with a counseling specialization from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. His professional interests include liberal arts education and student learning assessment, as well as diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging practices within higher education and the private sector.

Antoinette Boyd, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, Maryville University of St. Louis
Antoinette Boyd is director of Career Success & Professional Development at Maryville University. She brings 13 years of experience in employment services, career, professional, and workforce development. She’s a graduate of Webster University, with a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s in human resources. She completed her doctorate at Maryville with a research focus on unconscious bias in hiring. Dr. Boyd is passionate about connecting people to opportunities and opportunities to people; her purpose is helping others realize their potential and gain the confidence and skills needed to achieve their personal, professional, and career-oriented goals, amid a constantly evolving job market.
