Beyond the Career Center: Scaling Readiness Through Curricular Integration and Partnerships
How do you ensure career readiness reaches every student, not just those who walk through the career center doors? This session explores VCU School of Business’s Opportunity 2030 strategy for embedding career readiness and experiential learning directly into the classroom. We will discuss the shift from career development as an extracurricular “add-on” to a core academic pillar, highlighting the transferable strategies used to align classroom learning with real-world talent needs.
  • Summary

Career readiness can no longer be a destination for the self-selected few; it must be the foundation for every student to ensure higher education delivers on our goals of equitable student success outcomes. This session shares lessons learned at the VCU School of Business as we shifted career development from an optional extracurricular add-on to a core academic pillar. The core of the strategy is a four-year integrated curriculum that begins with embedded mentoring in the first year, moves through a required professional development course, and culminates in industry-specific pathways and classroom career panels. Our goal is for these mandatory touchpoints to ensure that even the most “career-passive” students graduate with a competitive edge.

Beyond the classroom, we will discuss how to layer high-impact supplements, such as professional development funding, student-led organizations, and executive ambassador programs, to deepen student engagement. This session pulls back the curtain on the relational strategy required to make this work: building deep, mutual trust with faculty, alumni, and employer partners. Attendees will leave with a toolkit for “intentional curiosity,” learning how to integrate career development strategies into the classroom to create a seamless, organization-wide culture of student career readiness.

Following this program, you will be able to:

    • Design a Scaffolding Framework: Identify strategies for embedding career readiness milestones into the academic curriculum.
    • Audit for Equitable Access: Evaluate service-based models to identify gaps where students may be missing out on career development opportunities.
    • Optimize Professional Ecosystems: Leverage optional supplements, such as student organizations, employer site visits, and alumni mentoring, to reinforce classroom learning.
    • Execute a “Curiosity-Led” Faculty Partnership: Implement tactics for building relationships with faculty, such as connecting with their research and aligning career outcomes with curricular goals.
