Cultivating Student Development and Community Engagement Through Internships

• Join us as we explore how internships serve as critical assets to scaffold student development and bolster community engagement. Attendees will learn best practices to develop a refined university internship program grounded in civic connections and student growth.

• Summary

  The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is committed to supporting the local community and regional socio-economic environment through our work. This community-engaged orientation has led to UWM receiving the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. UWM's internship programs have reflected this focus as we have rooted our work of building partnerships with local businesses and organizations in the Milwaukee area. 

  Over the previous two years, the university supported internship programs at UWM through the use of federal work study dollars for off-campus positions, along with the development and implementation of grant-funded internships. 

  In this webinar, we will explore the status of UWM internship programming and our vision for the future. Specifically, we will focus on how we employ internships as a tool for student development and community engagement. Our practices include a required internship course with intentional reflection and professional development activities, co-curricular programming, streamlined processes, and expanded support for internship sites and supervisors. 

  Following this program, you will be able to:

  • Describe how a university-wide internship program can be developed;
  • Establish tangible steps professionals can take to ensure internship programs support student; and
  • Learn development and community engagement through theory-based practices.

• Format

  During this one-hour webinar, the presenter will deliver a synchronized audio and PowerPoint presentation. Participants will have time for live Q&A throughout the program and may be asked to contribute opinions or feedback via live chat, virtual polling, and other mechanisms.

  Jasmine Salton, Community Engagement & Experiential Learning Program Manager, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee - Center for Student Experience and Talent

  Jasmine Salton serves as a community engagement and experiential learning program manager at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she manages the Community Leaders Internship Program. In this position, she also builds, secures, and maintains internal and external partnerships, while helping students find internships that align with their career interest. In addition, she co-advises the nonprofit, education, and social services career community. She is an alumnus of the university.

  

  Andrew Hirsh, Internship and Assessment Manager, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee - Center for Student Experience and Talent

  Andrew Hirsh currently serves as the internship and assessment manager at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He simultaneously works part time as the interim assessment director at Marquette University. He previously worked in residence life and admissions areas of higher education. He is passionate about student-centered learning and supporting student development through differentiated and inclusive practices. In his current role at UWM, Hirsh oversees the arts, humanities, and social sciences internship program. In addition, he co-advises the health and medicine career community and supports assessment initiatives connected to university-wide experiential learning. He earned two degrees from Marquette University including a Master of Education in student affairs in higher education and an Honors Bachelor of Science in middle/secondary education and broad field science (with a chemistry minor).
