The Maximus Summer Internship Program is a mission-driven talent pipeline that advances workforce leadership. The program strategically engages with students to achieve excellent outcomes.
“Through targeted recruiting, structured onboarding, and professional development, interns gain hands-on and impactful experience,” says Kristen Lopez, senior recruitment specialist at Maximus on the campus and early careers team.
“Internship program alumni continue into leadership, demonstrating its impact in developing high-performing talent while driving innovation and excellence.”
The Maximus Summer Internship Program—led by Flore Dorcely-Mohr, senior manager of the campus and early careers recruiting team—is a 10-week, paid experience designed to develop future leaders in government services. Interns receive competitive benefits, essential equipment, and dedicated support from the campus and early careers team while working in remote, hybrid, or on-site roles.
Maximus created its internship program to address the need for a robust talent pipeline that supports the mission of empowering communities and delivering impactful government services. Recognizing a gap in early-career talent, the program provides students and professionals with experiential learning opportunities that cultivate skills for long-term career success.
This internship program is designed to achieve four key objectives:
- Develop a sustainable talent pipeline—Identify and cultivate mission-driven early-career professionals who bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to public service.
- Create structured opportunities for early-career professionals—Through these opportunities, interns gain industry experience, build essential skills, and advance into long-term roles.
- Enhance retention and career growth—Provide interns with meaningful work, facilitate peer networking, encourage participation in Maximus’ employee resource groups, and offer professional development to inspire long-term engagement with Maximus.
- Ensure measurable impact—Track program success through data-driven KPIs, including demographic metrics, retention rates, and full-time conversion.
The program bridges academic theory and skills with real-world application, empowering interns to make meaningful contributions to Maximus’ mission. Key features of the program include:
- Tailored onboarding for a successful start;
- Biweekly professional development meetings; and
- Networking opportunities with peers and leaders.
A signature highlight is the Intern Showcase, during which participants present their projects to Maximus’ leadership, earning recognition and valuable feedback. The showcase is a part of the company’s annual National Intern Day celebration.
Maximus’ commitment to targeted recruiting efforts, engaging hiring practices, and hiring manager training ensures a smooth recruiting process, with innovative tactics, such as virtual and onsite career fairs. Professional development webinars, employer spotlights, and information sessions also drive engagement and participation.
Maximus uses a comprehensive evaluation methodology, integrating both quantitative and qualitative metrics to measure success. The results from its 2024 internship program include:
- 100% internship offer acceptance rate;
- 82% intern retention;
- 56% of eligible interns converted to full-time roles; and
- 95% positive feedback on meaningful work, structured onboarding, and professional development.
These results reinforce Maximus’ investment in talent development and its commitment to workforce innovation. Qualitative feedback from interns and managers informs continuous improvement, according to the team, which notes that these evaluations demonstrate the program’s ability to exceed industry benchmarks in satisfaction, retention, and conversion.
Maximus remains committed to expanding the program, deepening industry partnerships, and enhancing outreach.
By fostering leadership development and ensuring access to professional pathways, Maximus has successfully advanced interns into management roles. This initiative supports Maximus’ commitment to talent development, ensuring future leaders are equipped to meet the evolving demands of government service delivery.
