The average student-to-professional staff level is 1,889 students to each career services professional, according to the 2012-13 Career Services Benchmark Survey.
The average career center has 5.3 full-time equivalent (FTE) professional staff, up from 5.1 in 2011-12. However, professional staffing levels vary greatly depending on the Carnegie Classification TM of the school. Very high research universities average 12.3 FTE professional staff, while baccalaureate colleges average between 2 and 3.5 FTE.
Schools of art, music, and design had the lowest ratio of professional staff to students at 598.1 students per professional staff member. Public, urban, multi-campus associate degree schools registered the highest ratio with one professional staff member for each 10,272.2 students.
